Smooth, creamy custard is the perfect finish for just about any meal. It’s one of the easiest desserts I learned, to be honest. Easy and delicious? Oh, yeah, baby!
What is custard?
Custard is basically milk or cream and eggs, and sometimes uses flour or gelatin to thicken it. Many people will bake their custard in a water bath in the oven to get a creamy consistency. Our custard recipe is made completely on the stove top!

Ingredients you need:
Making your no bake custard:
- Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until smooth and creamy.
- Begin to heat the cream on the stove top over medium heat in a medium sized pot. Stir occasionally only to prevent burning.
- Remove some of the hot cream to the egg yolks and mix vigorously to temper the yolks.
- Pour the yolks in slowly to the hot cream while stirring continuously stirring over medium high heat.
- Continue to add yolks and stirring until all yolks are added.
- Heat the custard gently until it thickens to coat the back of a spoon. Remove from heat, and add vanilla.
- Pour into ramekins or bowls and chill before serving.
- Serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg, if desired.
How to make no bake creme brulee:
Simply sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon on top of the chilled no bake custard. Using a baking torch or the back of a hot spoon, heat the sugar until caramelized. Serve immediately.

Easy No Bake Vanilla Custard

Ingredients
- 6 egg yolks
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Gently beat the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until smooth and cream and set aside.
- Add the heavy cream to a medium sized pot on medium heat.
- Continue to heat gently until the cream begins to bubble on the edges, but stir only occasionally to prevent burning. Heat for approximately 5-7 minutes, allowing the mixture to being to thicken.
- Remove 1/4 cup of the hot cream to the egg yolks and mix vigorously to temper the yolks.
- Pour the yolks in, slowly, to the heated cream while continuously stirring over medium heat.
- Continue to add yolks and stirring until all yolks are added.
- Heat the custard gently until it thickens to coat the back of a spoon. Remove from heat, and stir in vanilla extract.
- Pour 4 ramekins
- Chill for 2-3 hours to finish setting.
- Serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg, if desired.
