When I was a kid, I remember getting oatmeal for breakfast nearly every day. It was filling, hearty, and nourishing. With a tight budget, and a family of 6 to feed, oatmeal was also cheap.
This is my favorite gluten free oatmeal cookie recipe. It brings back so many childhood memories for me. From baking with my grandmother to enjoying afternoon tea with a plate of fresh made cookies, it’s like happiness in a circle of yumminess. All in a healthy oatmeal cookies recipe.
The way to my hubby’s heart is through his stomach. True story. He loves his sweets and treats, too. Growing up, his mother would buy the Quaker oatmeal cookies and he was hooked.
I love to say yes to baking him his favorite treats, but I like to balance his gluten intake. It’s just a healthy way to be–balanced. Now, these aren’t the name brand cookies, but I still think they are the best oatmeal cookie recipe ever!

Is oatmeal gluten free?
Yes, and no. While oats themselves do not have gluten, they are often processed on the same equipment as wheat. Cross contamination can easily occur in these circumstances.
If you need to be absolutely gluten free, you want to make sure to check the labels of your oats. You are looking for certified gluten free oats. Just to be on the safe side, you will also want to only enjoy a small amount of each package and see how you react. If you are fine, then it’s a go to use the rest of the package of oats. Regular oats may be cross contaminated.
Is oatmeal wheat free?
Again, yes and no. If you have certified “gluten free” oats, then you don’t have to worry about cross contamination. However, if they are not labeled gluten free you will want to be on the cautious side, as wheat may have come into contact with them.
Depending on the level of sensitivity, you may want to go for the certified gluten free oats. If you are on a strict gluten free diet, it’s better to be safe than sorry with this one.
Are raisins gluten free?
Raisins are one of the naturally gluten free foods, as are most dried fruits. I have not found any instance or reason to believe they could be cross contaminated. They should be safe even for people with celiac disease.
What other recipes can I use with oats?
Oat flour recipes are fairly easy. For gluten free cookies, I generally process oats into oat flour 1:1 in place of white flour. It does give it more body and it can be a bit heavier, but we enjoy the flavor.
To make your own oat flour, simply add your gluten free oats to a blender or food processor and grind until a fine flour. Every cup of oats will yield 1 1/4 cups of oat flour. Store leftovers in the freezer for optimum freshness.

Ingredients:
- 2 cups of oats, to be made into flour (certified gluten oats if you need to be completely gluten free)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup butter, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup raisins
Instructions:
- Place oats to a food processor or blender and whir until it’s a flour texture.
- Add the cinnamon and baking powder and whir for another moment to mix.
- In a mixer on medium high speed, cream the butter and sugars together.
- Add the egg, vanilla, and salt and mix well.
- Add the flour mixture 1/4 cup at a time, until combined.
- Stir in raisins. Drop by rounded teaspoons on baking sheet.
- Bake at 375 for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheet before removing to a cooling rack.
- Makes about 2 dozen 2 inch cookies.
