I have to admit, that fall is my favorite time of year. Apple festivals, apple picking and just enjoying all things spicy sweet. The Frenchman and hubby agree. Fall is a family favorite.

Hubby loves all apple type desserts. Apple crisp, apple pie, and caramel apples. I decided to give him the best of all worlds and make him a caramel apple galette.

The first time I made this caramel apple galette, the hubby, boy, and the Frenchman were in awe. Words couldn’t come, and “No picture could do this justice”, they said. Marveling at the flaky layers and the tender apples, the cinnamon sauce on the top sent it up a couple of notches in their book.

The Frenchman is known for his ability to control how much he eats at one time (I have NO idea how he does that, really) but this was one dish he actually asked for and ate seconds!

What is a galette, anyway?

A galette is essentially what is used to describe a French pastry. It’s a flat, freeform cake that can be round and is made from a flaky dough. Crispy, yet tender texture on the outside. The filling can be either sweet or savory.

Do I have to use homemade pie crust?

You can make a galette with either a homemade pie crust, or you can use frozen puff pastry dough. For simplicity sake, you can use the puff pastry instead of the homemade pie crust. The stuff is amazing! Find it in the freezer section of your local grocery store, thaw, roll and bake!

Making the homemade crust gives it a rustic feel, and you can control the ingredients. Either way, homemade crust or using a puff pastry dough for the galette base means that this dessert is ready start to finish in just under 45 minutes.

Add some caramel, spiced apples and you will have created something amazingly delicious!

Ingredients you need:

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 
  2. Place four, salt, and sugar in a food processor and pulse. Add in butter, and pulse until crumbly.
  3. Drizzle cold water until dough begins to come together. Turn out onto floured surface and knead a few times.
  4. Form into a disk, and allow to rest in the fridge. Remove dough, and on a floured surface, roll into a 9 inch circle.
  5. Core and thinly slice apples and place apple slices in middle of dough disk, and fold the edges up over the apples. 
  6. Bake, then remove from oven, and drizzle caramel over galette. 
  7. Allow to cool slightly.
