What exactly is charoset?
Charoset is a traditional side dish served during a Passover seder. A symbol of slavery, it represents the mortar that the Hebrews were forced to make themselves to build with.
It’s a sweet salad made apples, cinnamon, honey, walnuts and wine. While common for the seder, it can be enjoyed any time of year. We like to add it to our BBQ parties, or take it to gatherings.
No Alcohol Charoset
Do I need to use wine in our charoset?
That’s the best part. This recipe is very versatile and wine is not needed. As a matter of fact, this recipe doesn’t use any alcohol at all! We change it up by using grape juice to get the same flavors and effects, without the buzz.
What kind of apples should I use?
I like to use a combination of apples in my charoset. The tart Granny Smith blends well with the sweeter Golden Delicious and Golden Yellow. If you only want to use one kind of apple to make it easier, then try a sweeter apple like Red Delicious, or Cortland.
Ingredients you need:
- Granny Smith apples
- Red Delicious apples
- Golden Delicious apples
- Honey
- Crushed walnuts
- Cinnamon
- Red grape juice
Making your charoset:
- Chop the apples into small pieces, leaving the skins on, and place in a large bowl.
- Add remaining ingredients to apples, and stir to combine.
- Allow flavors to meld in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.
