What is more American than an apple dessert? All of my favorite desserts are of the apple variety and this apple crisp is no exception. It’s a great alternative to pie.
What I delicious love most about this apple crisp is the flood of spices that pair perfectly with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream. Top it with some homemade caramel, and you have a mouthwatering dessert like none other!

What kind of apples are best for baking?
While you can use any apple for virtually any reason, some apples lend themselves better to baking, or fresh eating. The different amount of sugars and sweetness plays a factor in this.
I like to use Golden Delicious apples for this recipe, as they are my hubby’s favorite, but mix it up and try any of these apples:
- Cortland
- Braeburn
- Empire
- Fuji
- Gala
- Granny Smith

Ingredients you need
- Baking apples
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground cloves
- Rolled oats
- Butter
- All purpose flour
- Brown sugar

Making your classic apple crisp
- Preheat oven and prepare baking dish.
- Peel, core and slice apples. Place in a large bowl.
- Add in spices and stir to combine. Pour into a 9×13 casserole dish.
- In a medium sized bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, and brown sugar.
- Add softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix together.
- Spread evenly over apples.
- Bake, then allow to cool slightly before serving.

Classic Apple Crisp
Ingredients
- 6 large baking apples
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1/2 cup butter softened
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Peel, core and slice 6 large baking apples. Place in a large bowl.
- Add in spices and stir to combine.
- Pour into a 9x13 casserole dish.
- In a medium sized bowl, combine rolled oats, flour, and brown sugar.
- Add softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix together with a spoon or baking spatula to create a thick paste.
- Spread evenly over apples until all sides are sealed and the apples are completely covered. Bake apple crisp for 50 minutes until the top of the crisp is brown and apples below are bubbling.
- Allow to cool a bit (about 15 minutes), then enjoy warm with some vanilla ice cream!
