When the days start getting shorter, the hubby, Frenchman and I love to enjoy hot beverages in the evening. The kind that make you want to curl up with a good book, soft blanket and just forget that the world exists for a while. You too?
What is it about a hot cup of our favorite beverage that makes everything seem okay again?
Maybe it’s the soothing heat as it glides down your throat, or the warming aroma that swirls around your nose. Whatever it is, the feeling is just this side of perfection.
Now, the hubby and I used to be big fans of big chain coffee shops. The kind that charge $1 a syllable coffee shops. Budget breaking, waistline destroying coffee drinks. The spending had to stop and the calories had to stop.
Off to the kitchen to create a fancy coffee just like our favorite starbucks drink that would taste just as good as the coffee shops, but be much easier on the budget. This peppermint mocha is so good!

The problems I had to contend with:
- it had to pass the Frenchman’s approval
- the peppermint mocha HAS to be minty, and mocha-y
- budget friendly
- easy enough for the boy to make on his own
I think that this peppermint mocha is just what we were looking for! If you want it to be keto friendly, use erythritol and skip the candy cane topping on the side. If you are concerned about using a sugar substitute for any reason, feel free to use coconut sugar or honey instead.

Sure. Cocoa powder is usually easier to find, and tends to be cheaper than cacao powder. Although derived from the same plant, the main difference between the two is in the processing.
Cocoa powder is heated at much higher temps and many feel that destroys most of the vital nutrients. You can read more about that here if you want.

Ingredients you need:

Making your peppermint mocha:
- Blend hot coffee, cocoa powder, sweetener and extract together in a blender until smooth.
- Pour into 2 medium sized coffee mugs.
- Top with whipped cream.
- Enjoy
How can I make this low carb?
Simply substitute the granulated sugar for equal amounts of erythritol. If you would like this to be dairy free, simply swap out the whipped cream for coconut whipped cream or leave it off.
What if I don’t like coffee?
If you are wanting to avid coffee, you could use coffee substitutes. Here are some ideas if you want to avoid caffeine.
