What kind of oats do I use?

There are a couple kind of oats. It’s all about the amount of processing the plant goes through. Oat groats are the “berries” that grow on the oat plant itself. They are the least amount of processed oats you can get. When they get cut up, they are referred to as “steel cut oats”, or Irish oats.

Old fashioned rolled oats are the oat groats that have been steamed and, you guessed it, rolled. When THOSE are cut up, that’s when you have quick oats.

Most often, I prefer the old fashioned rolled oats. I like that their texture will hold up much better than quick oats. You can also use steel cut oats or oat groats if you would like, but the cooking time may need to be adjusted.
